The Sacred Cry
Lament in Our Contemporary World
A living voice practice exploring the art of lament
A recurring gathering for those who feel called to
express, witness, and sound what cannot remain silent.
Next edition: October
About the workshop
Across time and cultures, lament has been a way of carrying grief, calling to those who have gone, and giving voice to what the heart cannot hold in silence.
The Sacred Cry explores lamentation as both an ancient tradition and a living contemporary practice.
Through listening, vocal exploration, and guided improvisation, participants are invited into the expressive landscape of the cry — from whisper to wail, from trembling breath to a full-bodied voice.
This is not a performance space, but a space of presence.
A space where voice becomes a bridge between inner experience and shared human expression.
This workshop is part of Embodied Voice Practices, exploring voice work, emotional expression, and somatic awareness.
A Recent Gathering
In our recent gathering, we came together to honor the turning of the earth and the unfolding of our inner landscapes.
Something returned again and again:
to truly experience our existence, we must be willing to feel all of it.
Voices trembled, broke, and opened.
There was courage. There was beauty. There was depth beyond expectation.
A space of witnessing.
A space of aliveness.
A space where nothing has to be held alone.
I am alive. And I will not be silent.
Who this workshop is for
This work may resonate with you if you are:
drawn to voice as a pathway to emotional expression and presence
curious about lament traditions and ritual forms of sound
interested in embodied voice, somatic practice, or vocal improvisation
seeking a space where grief, longing, and love can be expressed safely through voice
No previous vocal training is required.
What matters most is openness, curiosity, and a willingness to listen deeply — to yourself and to others.
The work & the rhythm
The work
Participants will explore the expressive possibilities of crying, calling, and extended vocal sounds. Through breath, body awareness, and vocal experimentation, we will approach the voice not as performance but as a living emotional instrument.
Listening to traditional laments from different cultures will provide a doorway into the deeper human roots of this practice. From there, participants will be guided toward creating their own personal lament.
A typical workshop unfolds over three days:
Day 1
We begin in circle, listening to traditional laments and exploring voice-opening practices that invite the textures of crying, calling, and wailing.
Day 2
Through breath, movement, and vocal experimentation we explore screams, cries, and extended vocal sounds. Participants begin shaping their own lament.
Day 3
We enter a shared ritual space. Participants create and share a personal lament, supported by the group, in a closing ceremony.
Facilitators
Julianna Bloodgood is a vocalist, performer, and facilitator working at the intersection of embodied voice, somatic practice, and artistic research. Her work explores voice as a relational, physical, and expressive force — emerging through the body, sensation, and presence rather than through technique alone.
Drawing from years of performance, ensemble work, and somatic inquiry, Julianna creates spaces where voice can unfold organically, in dialogue with movement, listening, and collective process. Her facilitation emphasizes trust, attunement, and the intelligence of the body as a primary source of creative knowledge.
Her work is rooted in the belief that the voice is not something we perform, but something we uncover.
